April 2008 - Shopping Carts The Challenges Recently, we heard a story about a company who went on a 'shopping cart round-up' and located approximately 6,000 abandoned shopping carts throughout the city. This prompted us to think about how difficult bulky, lightweight metal is to transport and recycle. So why not shred them first? The Solution When building a shredder for handling bulky metals, SSI specifies one that is large enough to accept the material and robust enough to process the material around the clock without destroying itself. We ran these shopping carts on a Dual-Shear™ shredder, powerful enough to shred without overloading or reversing. And large enough to grab a hold of, and finish off the steel carts. Not even the heavy-duty solid bars or wheels posed the slightest problem for this shredder.
