December 2006 - Holiday Scrap The Challenges If you really look at what you want to shred, there is often more to it than you realize. In this case it's not just paper. This shredding challenge included a wooden tree stand with nails holding it together and a tree with long limbs. The challege is to find a shredder that can process all these materials without creating much noise or dust, without wrapping the limbs around the shaft and also without being damaged by metal. The Solution The SSI Dual-Shear™ shredder was the solution. The large 52" opening can handle bulky materials like the tree, and the 1.5" wide steel cutters can tear through all types of materials including light metals. Between each cutter is a cleaning finger which is designed to keep material from wrapping around the shaft. The system even includes a patented shock protecton system to protect the shredder from damage should the occassional heavy piece of steel enter the shredder. The final sizing was processed on an SSI Quad shredder™ with a screen, so we could get the sizing small enough to send out in our Christmas cards!
