February 2006 - Appliances The Challenges Shredding offers excellent volume reduction to lower transportation costs. But to maximize recycling of appliances, liberation of the various material components is critical so they can be cleanly separated for recovery. It's a challenge to find a shredder large enough to accept appliances, that can deliver the small output size required for optimal recovery. Further, many shredders process via impact, which causes entrapment rather than liberation. The Solution With small output sizing requirements, SSI's Quad™ shredders are ideally suited for this application because they make dense, uniform, flowable and well liberated materials that can be fed directly to primary sorting equipment or shipped to processors at optimal density with minimal airspace. The Quad™ does this by incorporating an integral screen that does not allow the material to fall out of the shredder until it has been sized small enough to pass through the holes in the screen. During the process of recirculating the material for size, the machine "drags" the material over the screen surface, which literally rips it apart and causes liberation to occur.
