February 2007 - Carpet The Challenges From plastic lumber to alternative fuel, more old carpet is being recycled than ever before. However, in order to be converted into a recycled product, carpet must be first be reduced to small pieces. The problem with carpet is that it's made up of extremely tough fibers that are designed to last 'forever' under our dirty feet. It's also shock-absorbent or compressible, which makes it tough to shred. When shredded, the fibers are released into a 'fog' of dust and fuzz that can be hard to handle. The Solution SSI's Quad™ shredders are ideally suited for this application. They have the power required to shred such tough material and the ability to produce small output sizes without extensive material handling. With its integrated screen, the Quad™ contains the light, fluffy shredded material within the shredding box until it has been sized small enough to pass through the holes in the screen. During the process of recirculating the material for size, the machine "drags" the material over the screen surface, actively forcing it through the screen holes, rather than relying on gravity alone. The Quad offers a small footprint, contains the dust and fibers, and minimizes the number of steps required to prepare carpet for conversion to a useable product.
