July 2006 - Printers The Challenges What do people do with their old printers and electronic devices? There are growing numbers of SSI customers who would answer: Shred them! This may seem like a simple answer, but, electronics are composed of a wide variety of materials including plastic, metals of all kinds, rubber, fiberglass, etc. and each of these materials behaves differently in shredding machines. Our challenge has been to develop a shredder that can process all kinds of electronics, commingled, to a point where the output from the shredder can be fed into automated sorting machinery for reclamation & recycling. The Solution SSI QUADT Shredders have proven to be the ideal solution for this application because they make uniform, flowable, well liberated materials that are perfectly suited for feed into downstream sorting machinery. The Quad design is unique because it uses an integral screen that does not allow the material to fall out of the shredder until it has been sized small enough to pass through the screen holes. The shredder has to reprocess the material several times in order to adequately to size it, and while the material is being reprocessed the machine has to "drag" the material over the screen surface, which literally rips it apart and causes liberation to occur.
