March 2006 - Bulky Waste The Challenges How does a municipality in a "land-locked" area combat the rising costs of solid waste transportation and disposal? Landfill space is expensive and disposal options are often limited to remote areas—sometimes hundreds of miles from where the garbage is generated. Household garbage can generally be compacted and optimized for long haul to landfills, or it is small enough to feed directly into a waste-to-energy plant. On the other hand, bulky waste—such as furniture, mattresses, and construction debris—does not compact well and is difficult to achieve maximum payloads for long haul. It is also too large and unwieldy to feed directly into a waste-to-energy facility. The Solution With it's unmatched ability to shred "everything", SSI's monstrous PRI-MAX™ Model PR-6000 is large and powerful enough to reliably process such bulky wastes at rates exceeding 100-150 tons per hour. Material density can be easily doubled, with output sizing from 6-18", and metal liberated for recovery in the process. Municipalities now have a low-cost means to optimize transportation of bulky wastes or to divert it for lower cost disposal such as waste-to-energy plants. The 6000 is available as a stationary unit or on tracks.
