March 2007 - Copy Machine The Challenges Many companies have shredders that can destroy computer hard drives, and some recyclers can shred whole desktop computers and printers, but few companies can process whole copy machines! Copier manufacturers' know that their products are critical to the productivity of most offices, so they need to withstand a great deal of abuse. Consequently, copiers are made with heavy structural metal components and solid metal roller shafts. In the past, recyclers would have to dismantle such machines by hand to harvest the heavy metals, or buy a very large, expensive shredder to handle these materials. The Solution SSI's newest PRI-MAX™ reducer—the model PR-770—is an ideal primary processor for bulky scrap, such as large copiers and printers. The PR-770 is a relatively low horsepower, low cost solution to prepare such tough materials for secondary processing. With a nearly 8' x 8' infeed opening and large active cutting zone, the PR-770 is easily bulk fed. Its unique 'open' cutting table, bi-directional shredding, and load-sensing drive allow the PR-770 to process materials that--until now--would require a shredder with ~2x the horsepower. Primary shredding liberates heavy metal for removal, reduces wear, and improves efficiency of secondary shredders like SSI's QUAD™ shredders.
