November 2005 - Hurricane Debris Cleanup

The Challenges

Hurricane debris—especially in populated, residential areas, is a mess of different materials tangled together and difficult to separate. When a home has been leveled by a hurricane, it doesn't simply become a clean pile of wood to process. The structure may be made of wood, but within its walls were appliances, furniture, carpeting, plumbing, wiring, fixtures, metal studs, bicycles, bed frames, concrete or brick, tools and yard equipment—even the kitchen sink! Such materials are huge challenges for traditional high speed grinders, causing significant wear, potentially catastrophic equipment failure and even safety issues.

The Solution

SSI's PRI-MAX™ line. PRI-MAX facilitates the clean-up of hurricane debris, by allowing contractors to reduce high volumes of mixed materials efficiently, with the highest on-line reliability and lowest operations and maintenance costs. Extensive pre-sorting is unnecessary as PRI-MAX reduces a very broad range of difficult materials, and non-shreddables will not damage the machine due to its superior shockload protection design.

Shredder model:
  PRI-MAX™ (PR-4000M)
Cutting table features:
Preferred low-speed, high torque shredding technology
  (6) 3" thick, multiple hook, bi-directional cutters per shaft (Hardox 500)
    94” x 69” (45 sq ft) active cutting zone
Extreme-duty, “open” cutting deck allows abrasives and pre-sized materials to pass through freely without unnecessary wear and tear
    (2) Independently-operating, bi-rotational shafts maximize production and minimize wrapping (material shreds whether shafts running in forward or reverse)
35.5” diameter cutter sweep, maximizes grabbing ability and prevents bridging
Drive features:
Diesel Hydraulic Power Unit with 540HP CAT C15 Engine
  Hydraulic overload reversing
Automatic horsepower control for heavy-duty & high-speed processing
Output:
60-80 tons/hour of mixed demolition debris with 12" nominal sizing
