November 2006 - Pumpkins The Challenges Okay, you caught us…shredding pumpkins is not really a challenge. There’s nothing too difficult about it. But imagine what a great perk it is to be working at a company like SSI. Instead of letting 'hoodlums' smash our rotten jack-o-lanterns in the street, we just bring them in and shred them! As much fun as we had making this video, there are 'real world' situations where agricultural and food wastes are shredded. With the food industry as large as it is, billions of pounds of waste are generated annually. Restaurant wastes, outdated canned/packaged foods, and other organic materials are often converted into animal feed or compost using shredders. Even corn and straw are being converted into ethanol and other alternative energies. Maybe someday shredded pumpkins will fuel your car! The Solution We chose a small Dual-Shear shredder to again show that we can shred just about anything. Ideally, for large, bulky items such as pumpkins we would have used a RAM to assist in pushing the pumpkins through the shredder and allow for a higher throughput volume.
