The Challenges Shredding clothes to small pieces is more challenging than you might think. First, it's not a single shirt or piece of clothing at a time that needs to be shredded. It's a FULL BAG! The shredder has to be able to handle a full bag at once without overloading. Shredding textiles is very difficult. It's not friable like hard plastics—each piece has to be cut with precision and getting a small size requires the material to be recirculated and cut many times. The Solution SSI's Uni-Shear™ SR-500 handles the full bag load without overloading the shredder. It uses a "Smart Ram" to control the "push" of material into the rotor. Just the right amount of material is processed at a time. Precision cutting is no problem—the solid steel rotor is rotating at 90 rpm and 80 cutters are attached to the rotor. That's over 7,000 cuts per minute! The particle size is controlled by a screen that is fitted against the back side of the rotor. Oversize material is automatically recirculated back into the cutting chamber and "pushed" back into the rotor by the ram until the acceptable particle size is achieved! So there you have it, a system that can take a full load of clothing and shred it to a small uniform particle size fast enough to keep up with any teenager's hygiene!
