October 2006 - Refrigerators The Challenges Large scrap metal processors operate big, high-speed auto-shredders that can engulf bulk metal such as refrigerators to make them manageable for downstream recovery. But how do small scrap yards, transfer stations, recycling facilities, and haulers cost-effectively transport such light materials long distances to these large processors? Shredding offers excellent volume reduction to lower transportation costs, and many metal recovery companies will pay a premium for processed scrap metal over bulk scrap metal. But high-speed shredders require a lot of power, generate noise, and require special foundations. Low-speed, high torque shredders don't have these problems, but the production capacity is often much lower....until now. The Solution SSI's PRI-MAX primary reducers are well-suited for bulky light-gauge scrap such as appliances, and can process such materials at rates up to 50 tons/hour. Mobile or stationary versions are available, facilitating multiple site or fixed facility processing.
