September 2006 - Burlap The Challenges The last thing you're thinking about when you are enjoying a cup of specialty coffee is the burlap bags the raw beans are shipped in. If you're a "green" roaster and have to deal with a large volume of the bags it's an issue. What can you do with them besides throw them away? This processing challenge was recently presented to SSI. The SSI Uni-Shear™ was selected to test the suitability of shredding burlap bags to create a uniform particle size that can be used as an alternative fuel. The Solution The Uni-Shear™ SR-500 system was tested on bales of the burlap. The shredder processed the material at high volume—over 10,000 pounds per hour and produced a uniform particle size around 4 inches which met the customers requirements. Enjoy your next cup of coffee knowing that SSI is working on a solution to keep the packaging material out of landfills!
