When it comes to industrial shredding, relying on kinetic energy and momentum is a recipe for disaster. For over four decades, SSI Shredding Systems has engineered a distinctly different approach: low-to-medium speed, high-torque technology. By building machines that trade high speed impact for incredible rotational force, SSI has created equipment that methodically grabs, shears, and tears through materials that would destroy lesser machines.
Here is a closer look at the core technology and engineering features that make SSI shredders the gold standard for the world's most demanding waste applications.

Intelligent Drive Systems & Jam Protection
Shock loads and surprises are a daily reality in industrial processing. Whether an engine block is hiding in municipal solid waste or thick alloy is mixed into scrap, heavy-duty shredders must survive the "unshreddables".
- Severe Shock Protection (SSP™): Rather than shattering a rotor upon impact, SSI’s intelligent systems sense the spike in resistance immediately. The shredder automatically stops, reverses the shafts to clear the jam, and tries to process the material again. If the item is unable to pass the machine shuts down to protect itself, saving operators tens of thousands of dollars in emergency repairs.
- Flexible Drive Configurations: SSI machines are outfitted with simple, direct-drive designed to reduce the number of parts in the drive train. They can be configured with electric, hydraulic, or proprietary SmartDrive™ setups tailored to application specific requirements.

Advanced Cutting Chamber Architecture
Building a machine to run 24/7 requires decades of field-tested engineering at the cutter level. SSI shredders are designed to minimize friction, heat, and wear:
- Patented ACLS™: The Advanced Cutter Locking System efficiently maintains a tight cutter stack. This structural integrity prolongs the lifespan of hardened steel cutters and dramatically minimizes maintenance downtime.
- Pierce-Point & Bi-Directional Cutters: On 4-shaft models, lower bi-directional cutters shred material moving in either direction, eliminating lost production time during shaft reversals. Upper Pierce-Point cutters actively pull material into the center of the cutting chamber to enhance capacity. SSI offers various cutters designed to optimize application goals for all products.
- Friction & Heat Reduction: High-speed grinding generates intense friction and heat, increasing wear and the risk of fires or explosions. SSI’s cutters operate at low-to-medium RPMs causing friction to plummet, cutters to last significantly longer, and much lower levels of airborne dust and noise.
A Spectrum of Engineered Systems
Because there is no "one-size-fits-all" in industrial waste, SSI engineers distinct shaft configurations to tackle specific material behaviors and workflows:
- Pri-Max® Primary Reducers: Designed without sizing screens, these low-speed machines rely on raw power to rip and tear bulky items like construction debris or MSW, until they become flowable for downstream conveyance.
- Dual-Shear® Shredders: Two-shaft, low speed, high torque machines that can grab and process most any material into “strips” that are about the same width as the cutter thickness.
- Quad®, Tri-Shear® & Uni-Shear® Shredders: When specific particle sizes are required for downstream separation, these systems utilize specialized, easily removable sizing screens to keep recirculating material until it hits the desired output size. Different options are available depending on input material characteristics.
- Medium-Speed Finishers & Granulators: SSI’s highly specialized finishing machinery targets applications traditionally held by high-speed granulators, utilizing SSI’s precise cutting configurations and screens to cleanly liberate materials like copper wire from plastic jacketing.
When dealing with the toughest materials on earth, you don't need a machine that works most of the time, you need a tailor-made solution built to do the work and built to last.
